Notes for ROBERT STEDMAN:

Robert Stedman is said to have come from Holland. The earliest authority for that statement is a memorandum said to be copied from an almanac dated 1769 and written by his great-grandson Dr. John Stedman and Francis D. Stedman (b. 1801) when a boy at Exeter was called Dutchman by his playmates.

He was in Cambridge in 1638 and was made a freeman in 1639. He is supposed to have been the brother of John Stedman of Cambridge (b. 1601).

He lived on the north side of Winthrop Street between Holyoke and Dunster Streets. This house lot was enlarged by purchase till it extended through to Mt. Auburn and Holyoke Streets. In this form it remained in the family until nearly 1880.

(from Stedman Genealogy by Charles Ellery Stedman (1880)).

Robert and Ann Stedman were the English pioneers in Cambridge in 1638.

The linkage back to Thomas Stedman in Biddenden is not proved, but it seems possible based on the birth data and the family connections.

He married MARY QUINCY19 26 October 1773 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA20, daughter of HENRY QUINCY and MISS /UNKNOWN/. She was born 175221.

Notes for DR. JOHN STEDMAN:

Dr. John Stedman became a Physician of high repute and was specially skillful in the management of inoculation.

The following was copied by Mrs. Mary (Stedman) Meacham from an almanac dated 1769. "I am a young man just entering into the world with nothing to recommend me but my education and a few friends whom I obtained while I was assistant to a noted Physician in Boston who has recommended me to the world. I was born in Cambridge in the county of Middlesex in New England. My great-grandfather John Stedman came from Holland, a merchant, but in what year I cannot ascertain. [He means his great-great-grandfather Robert.] He settled in Cambridge, a town 3 1/2 miles from Boston where he died and left one son, my grandfather whose name was John, who married [Sarah Gibson] and had four sons and four daughters [5 sons and 3 daughters]. He died leaving a considerable estate [£3000] to be shared among the children but the property being divided was insufficient to support them all. Two of his sons John and Samuel at the ages of 20 and 21 years. [John, b. 1692, d. 1719 according to Harvard College Triennial.] The next whose name was Jonathan took his degree at Harvard [1726] and studied divinity. The final son, my father, whose name was Ebenezer had to maintain his mother and brother [Jonathan] and two sisters and their children for 12 years." Elizabeth (Stedman) Dolhond was well married so that Mrs. Sarah (Stedman) Sprague and Mrs. Mary (Stedman) Henshaw must have been the poor relations.

From a letter of Edmund Quincy to his daughter Mrs. D. Hancock in Philadelphia, 26 march 1776: "The preservation of Boston so far as it is preserved is a signal favor of Heaven though there are many egregious sufferers. Your brother H(enry) and his son Stedman in particular in whose dwellings were left Officers, men of singular honour. By the same rank of residents many had had their houses Ransacked."

Dr. and Mrs. John Stedman lived near the corner of Winter Street in the Salter House. The had for a servant a woman whose husband was a private in the British army named Gibson. On the evening of 18 April 1775, a grenadier knocked at the door which Mrs. Stedman opened and said that Gibson must report himself for duty at the bottom of the Common at 8 o'clock. "What does it mean?", asked she when Gibson returned. "Ah, madam," said Gibson, "I know as little as you."

The young wife waited for her husband's return with the greatest impatience, and, when he heard of the message, he went at once to Benjamin Church then on the Committee of Public Safety (before Benjamin Church's treachery was developed) and warning was at once sent out into the country, assuring the safety of Hancock and Adams and rousing the people to arms. (Gibson was killed on the retreat from Concord.)

When the family returned to Boston after the evacuation of Boston, they found it much damaged - floor boards having been torn up and their ends thrust into the fireplace for fuel, etc.

Mrs. C. H. Swan possessed (1880) fragments of a curiously carved box, which she used to be entire, in her childhood and in which Dr. John Stedman used to keep his instruments.

After his death in 1780, his widow married Gen. William Donnison by whom she had issue, a daughter marrying the Rev. R. M. Hodges of Cambridge whose son is Dr. R. M. S. [Swan?] of Boston and daughter married S. H. Swan of Cambridge.
