The chart below shows the DNA results that have currently been reported back from Family Tree DNA. The adminstrators have used color shading to try to highlight similarities. The results have been grouped in a fashion to help indicate where there are likely to be family relationships.

Each DNA test is associated by Family Tree DNA with a unique kit number. The kit number in the charts below is a link to the Member's Personal Page. The Personal Page provides the genealogical results submitted by the Member along with a DNA analysis provided by the Study administrators. Currently, the kit is also associated with the name of the Member's Earliest Known Ancestor. If you see an ancestor that you are familiar with, you may want to pay more attention to that result.

These are the families related to Gen. William Lee Davidson that came from Ireland in the early 1700s. The three known families are those of George Davidson who came to America and lived in Pennsylvania until about 1750 when he moved to what is now Iredell County, North Carolina. He was the father of Gen. William Lee Davidson.

The second of these families was the family of George's brother "Importation" John Davidson. He came to America about 1737 and settled in Beverly Manor in Augusta County, Virginia. He relocated to Iredell area about 1748 and died shortly afterwards. He was the father of Maj. William Davidson.

Third was the family of Samuel Davidson. Samuel also lived in Beverly Manor and later settled in South Carolina. His son Benjamin was the first anglo settler in what is now Transylvania County, North Carolina. His son Col. William Davidson settled initially in Buncombe County, North Carolina but relocated to Morgan County, Tennessee. DNA evidence confirmed the relationship of Samuel to John and George; however the exact relationship is still unknown but it is suspected that they were brothers.

   Family 2 - Daniel Davison of Boston (5 members)


Daniel Davison was born about 1630 in Scotland, and he married Margaret Low in Ipswich, Essex Co.,MA on 12 Apr 1657. Descendants of his family were later in NY, NJ and then VA, and the family name is shown as "Davisson" on many records (and many of the living descendants use that spelling today).

This family had a very large contingent in Harrison and Monongalia Co., VA in the 1800s (these counties were later in West Virginia). Members of this family were also in the Augusta Co., VA and Rockingham Co., VA areas.

   Family 4 - John Davidson of Bertie and/or Guilford Co., NC (16 members)


John Davidson had a son named Abraham in Guilford Co., NC around 1755 (per Abrahams own Rev. War documentation). Some records show that this was the same John Davidson who was married to Hannah Hughson and who was from Bertie Co., NC, but more research is needed on that. In addition, the John Davidson who was in Bertie is shown on some records with the middle name of "Goolman," but that could simply be due to confusion between him and the apparently unrelated John Goolman Davidson who was in Bluefield/Tazewell Co., VA.

Abraham Davidson had brothers named John and Joseph Davidson, and all three brothers were in Pittsylvania Co., VA by the 1780s. Abraham Davidson (1755-1838) had a son named Samuel Harris Davidson in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1795.

It appears that two of the Davidsons in Pittsylvania married daughters of Mark Shelton/Chilton (per his will and per a marriage bond), and Mr. Shelton/Chilton also lived in that county in VA. Members of this Davidson family were later in TN and then AR (and beyond).

Richard Davison married Katherine Downe/Downes in Middlesex Co., VA in 1690. There is also a record of a Richard Davison from Middlesex who traveled by horse to Charles City Co., VA (CCCo) in 1688, and the sheriff there sent Richard back to Middlesex since Richard "could not account for his abode" in CCCo.

Research in the Middlesex Co., VA area indicates that Richard Davison was probably the son of a John Davison and his wife Joan, and it is not known if Richard had any siblings. Richard and Katherine Davison aparently had sons named William and John, as well as a daughter named Mary Davison (her husband, if any, is unknown).

William and John Davison were both in Spotsylvania Co., VA in the 1720s, and John moved to Amelia Co., VA in the 1740s (the part that was later Prince Edward Co., VA). William stayed in the Spotsylvania/Orange Co., VA area, and that land eventually became part of Culpeper Co., VA. John Davison in Prince Edward Co., VA was married to Ann Sons/Soanes, and the wife of William Davison in Culpeper is not known.

This family seems to have typically spelled the name "Davison" (and at least John Davison in Prince Edward Co., VA could write his own name), but some descendants today spell the name "Davidson."
