The chart below shows the DNA results that have currently been reported back from Family Tree DNA. The adminstrators have used color shading to try to highlight similarities. The results have been grouped in a fashion to help indicate where there are likely to be family relationships.

Each DNA test is associated by Family Tree DNA with a unique kit number. The kit number in the charts below is a link to the Member's Personal Page. The Personal Page provides the genealogical results submitted by the Member along with a DNA analysis provided by the Study administrators. Currently, the kit is also associated with the name of the Member's Earliest Known Ancestor. If you see an ancestor that you are familiar with, you may want to pay more attention to that result.

Fast vs. Slow Mutating Alleles: The Alleles whose names are in red in the header row have been designated by FamilyTreeDNA as fast mutating. This means that, when comparing two kits, these alleles have less genealogical significance and figure less in determining if two kits have a family match.

These are the families related to Gen. William Lee Davidson that came from Ireland in the early 1700s. The three known families are those of George Davidson who came to America and lived in Pennsylvania until about 1750 when he moved to what is now Iredell County, North Carolina. He was the father of Gen. William Lee Davidson.

The second of these families was the family of George's brother "Importation" John Davidson. He came to America about 1737 and settled in Beverly Manor in Augusta County, Virginia. He relocated to Iredell area about 1748 and died shortly afterwards. He was the father of Maj. William Davidson.

Third was the family of Samuel Davidson. Samuel also lived in Beverly Manor and later settled in South Carolina. His son Benjamin was the first anglo settler in what is now Transylvania County, North Carolina. His son Col. William Davidson settled initially in Buncombe County, North Carolina but relocated to Morgan County, Tennessee. DNA evidence confirmed the relationship of Samuel to John and George; however the exact relationship is still unknown but it is suspected that they were brothers.

Daniel Davison was born about 1630 in Scotland, and he married Margaret Low in Ipswich, Essex Co.,MA on 12 Apr 1657. Descendants of his family were later in NY, NJ and then VA, and the family name is shown as "Davisson" on many records (and many of the living descendants use that spelling today).

This family had a very large contingent in Harrison and Monongalia Co., VA in the 1800s (these counties were later in West Virginia). Members of this family were also in the Augusta Co., VA and Rockingham Co., VA areas.

The earliest research places this family in Lowland Scotland during the 16th and early 17th centuries. One line was induced to migrate at Cromwell’s time to America, others to Ulster Ireland. Subsequent migrations have spread the family along the eastern seaboard of North America.

John Davidson had a son named Abraham in Guilford Co., NC around 1755 (per Abrahams own Rev. War documentation). Some records show that this was the same John Davidson who was married to Hannah Hughson and who was from Bertie Co., NC, but more research is needed on that. In addition, the John Davidson who was in Bertie is shown on some records with the middle name of "Goolman," but that could simply be due to confusion between him and the apparently unrelated John Goolman Davidson who was in Bluefield/Tazewell Co., VA.

Abraham Davidson had brothers named John and Joseph Davidson, and all three brothers were in Pittsylvania Co., VA by the 1780s. Abraham Davidson (1755-1838) had a son named Samuel Harris Davidson in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1795.

It appears that two of the Davidsons in Pittsylvania married daughters of Mark Shelton/Chilton (per his will and per a marriage bond), and Mr. Shelton/Chilton also lived in that county in VA. Members of this Davidson family were later in TN and then AR (and beyond).

Richard Davison married Katherine Downe/Downes in Middlesex Co., VA in 1690. There is also a record of a Richard Davison from Middlesex who traveled by horse to Charles City Co., VA (CCCo) in 1688, and the sheriff there sent Richard back to Middlesex since Richard "could not account for his abode" in CCCo.

Research in the Middlesex Co., VA area indicates that Richard Davison was probably the son of a John Davison and his wife Joan, and it is not known if Richard had any siblings. Richard and Katherine Davison aparently had sons named William and John, as well as a daughter named Mary Davison (her husband, if any, is unknown).

William and John Davison were both in Spotsylvania Co., VA in the 1720s, and John moved to Amelia Co., VA in the 1740s (the part that was later Prince Edward Co., VA). William stayed in the Spotsylvania/Orange Co., VA area, and that land eventually became part of Culpeper Co., VA. John Davison in Prince Edward Co., VA was married to Ann Sons/Soanes, and the wife of William Davison in Culpeper is not known.

This family seems to have typically spelled the name "Davison" (and at least John Davison in Prince Edward Co., VA could write his own name), but some descendants today spell the name "Davidson."

James Davidson, Senior was in Bedford Co., VA by at least 1779, when two of his apparent sons, James Davidson, Jr. and David Davidson, married Cockrane sisters there. Some records show the spelling as "Davison" versus "Davidson." Another son named Samuel Davidson stated in his own Rev. War pension application that his father James had come from PA. It is not clear where many of the descendants of James Davidson, Senior eventually went, but several were still in VA, well into the 1800s.

There were at least four marriages for John Davidsons in Campbell Co., VA between 1785 and the early 1800s. All of them seem to have involved members of the James Davidson, Senior family. Other given names in this family apparently included Joseph, Benjamin, William, James, Young, Abner and Thomas (and maybe George), among others.

For clarity, the reader should know that the above family was one of at least three apparently unrelated Davidson families in the Bedford (and later Campbell) Co., VA area in the late-1700s/early-1800s. The other two known Davidson families in that area were headed by Alexander Davidson and his wife Elizabeth Unknown (maybe Elizabeth Steele), and by Edward Davidson and his wife Agnes Mosby. Both Alexander Davidson and Edward Davidson had been in Buckingham Co., VA in the 1760s, but none of the above three families appear to have been "blood related" (and DNA results seem to be confirming that).

The majority of the Davidson men in Campbell Co., VA (which was created from Bedford in 1782)in the early-1800s appear to have been from the family of James Davidson, Senior, and the decendants of the other two unrelated Davidson families in that area seem to have been identifed and properly "separated" from this family by some researchers. One member of James Davidson, Senior's family was Reverend Samuel Davidson (married Frances Oglesby in 1802 and died 1861 in Appomattox Co., VA), and he was the pastor of Red Oak Baptist Church for many years. The Reverend was one of at least three Samuel Davidsons in this overall family, and one of those Samuel Davidsons married a women named Elender Lea, daughter of Gideon Lea, in the early-1800s in Campbell Co., VA.

Note: The apparently unrelated Alexander and Elizabeth Davidson also had a son named Samuel Davidson who married Elizabeth Thornhill in 1813, and that Samuel Davidson died in Appomattox Co., VA in 1848. As such, there were at least four Samuel Davidsons in the Campbell Co., VA area in the early 1800s.

There was a Stephen Davidson who was born in GA in 1785 (per a later census in KY, where this man eventually moved). For reasons unknown, this Stephen Davidson moved to Buckingham Co., VA, where he married Lucy Neighbours in 1808. This Stephen Davidson was apparently also the Stephen Davidson who was on the 1830 census in Campbell Co., VA, and he later moved to Ohio Co., KY (where he died).

A descendant of the above Stephen Davidson is a close DNA "match" to an apparent descendant of the James Davidson, Senior family. It is not known if Stephen's father had come to GA from James' family in VA, or if Stephen's father had come to GA directly from PA (versus yet some other possible scenario). Some researchers show that the father of this Stephen Davidson was a John Davidson, but there is no proof of that, apparently. It is not known why, but the family of this Stephen Davidson eventually started spelling the name"Davisson.

Alexander Davidson was born about 1648, and he married Sarah McDavid. They had a son around 1714 who was also named Alexander Davidson, and he married Sarah Ellis. Alexander and Sarah apparently moved from Gloucester Co., VA to Spotsylvania Co., VA, and he died there by Feb. 1748. Alexander and Sarah had a yet another Alexander Davidson about 1744, and he married Anna Bridges. This Alexander Davidson was a minister, and he moved to Barren Co., KY. Many records on their family can be found in that area of KY (and beyond). Note: There was also a man named Young Davidson who came to Barren Co., KY from Campbell Co., VA sometime after the above Alexander Davidson (early-1800s). Young Davidson was apparently not related to the above family of Alexander Davidson.

Some researchers show the parents of Charlton B. Davidson as William Davidson (born about 1745; maybe in VA) and Elizabeth Charlton. Some researchers also show the possible parents of that William Davidson as Walter Davidson who died in Montgomery Co., VA in 1785. More research is needed on these ancestors of Charlton B. Davidson.

Charlton B. Davidson and his wife Sallie Miller Barksdale had a son named William Preston Davidson about 1817 in Todd Co., KY, and he married Eliza Jane Rainey Parrish. They had a son named Thomas Charlton Davidson on 18 Feb 1844 in Paducah, KY (died Paris/Henry Co., TN in 1921), and Thomas married Amanda Hart.

John Davidson was the apparent father of Oliver Perry Davidson (born in 1826 in Stewart Co., TN). Charlton B. Davidson and a John Davidson were both on the 1830 Stewart Co., TN census. There is no "concrete proof," however, that John was the father of Oliver Perry Davidson. Oliver Perry Davidson died on 2 Jul 1863 in Lake Providence, LA while serving in the Union Army.

Two descendants of Oliver Perry Davidson are "12/12 marker DNA matches" to two descendants of Thomas Charlton Davidson. The "connection" between the family of Thomas Charlton Davidson and Oliver Perry Davidson is not currently clear.

Hezekiah Davidson was in Albemarle Co., VA as a young adult in the mid-1740s, and he married Tabitha Childers. Hezekiah moved to Cumberland Co., VA about 1760, and he and Tabitha had one known child who was named Philemon Davidson (died 1810 in Cumberland Co., VA).

It has long been wondered if this Hezekiah Davidson was out of the Davidson family that was in James City Co., VA by at least the 1680s, and then Charles City Co., VA after 1720. If so, then Hezekiah was almost certainly related to the Edward, David and William Davidson who were on the 1746 tithe list in Goochland Co., VA, and who then appeared on the 1764 tithe list in Buckingham Co., VA.

A descendant of Hezekiah Davidson is a "25/25 marker DNA match" to a descendant of a Davidson family that was in the Orange/Guilford Co., NC area by at least 1780. Several of the given names used by that Davidson family in NC, plus several other "clues," suggest that this family might have been out of the same Davidson family mentioned above in Goochland and then Buckingham Co., VA (and one branch of the family in Buckingham had gone to Pittsylvania/Henry Co, VA by the late 1760s, it appears). If the above relationship should prove to be correct, then Hezekiah Davidson was also related to that "James City/Charles City/Goochland/Buckingham Co., VA Davidson family," as some had expected all along (but more research is certainly needed).

The Davidson family in Orange/Guilford Co., NC was headed by a William and Elizabeth (Unknown) Davidson, and one of their sons was named Josiah Davidson, Senior (Josiah was born in VA about 1766, and he joined the militia in Orange Co., NC at the age of 14 in 1780). The other two sons of William and Elizabeth (Unknown) Davidson in Orange/Guilford Co., NC were David Davidson and William Davidson "Junior" (and these names were also used by the "Goochland/Buckingham Davidsons").

Note: Per a county petition, as well as several other records, there was at least one other Davi(d)son family in the Orange/Guilford Co., NC area in the 1770s (out of PA), and they do not appear to have been related to the above William Davidson. This other family seems to have spelled the name "Davison," and this family (which also included a William) is shown on records as having married into the Sidwell family on at least two occasions. There was also an Alexander Davi(d)son in that area of NC in the 1770s, and he may have been from yet a third Davi(d)son family, since the known Alexander Davison who was from the above family from PA was much too young to have appeared on a petetion in Orange Co., NC in the 1770s.

William Davidson arrived in Jefferson County Ohio in approximately 1799 when he leased land in Wayne Township. After what appears to be an untimely death in 1808, his wife Susannah remained in Jefferson County until 1831 when she was an original purchaser of 160 acres in Holmes Cty, German Twp (now Clark), Range 5; Twp 8; Sect 9; SE 1/4. A Nuncupative Will by William Davidson mentions his wife Susannah and Joshua Davidson, the oldest son, both of whom were a witness. There were 11 children of the marriage, Joshua, Eleanor, William Jr., Elizabeth, Sarah, James, Mary, Joseph, Susannah, Reason and Jane. Just prior to his entry to Jefferson Cty, Ohio some researchers believe that the family was in Washington County, PA which is across the Ohio River from Jefferson Cty, Ohio. While this appears to be correct, it is not proven. Prior to this period William was in Maryland where Joshua, the second child was born according to census data. William's wife Susannah was b. VA according to census data. Her surname is not known.
