  According to Charles East, who may have been the only person alive who knows the story, Alice Pond Steadman was named for her aunt Adelaide Alice Pond, her mother's sister. Her aunt was Adelaide Alice Woodward before her marriage to Preston Pond, Jr., a New Englander (born in Vermont) who was a lawyer in East Feliciana, and who when the Civil War came, commanded a Louisiana regiment, the 16th Louisiana Infantry. There's a biographical sketch of him in the book "Feliciana Confederates" by Michael F. Howell (1989). Colonel Pond died in 1864 and was buried in the Jackson Cemetery, Jackson, East Feliciana Parish, LA. Dates on his stone say he was born September 9, 1823, died June 15, 1864.
